Teak Plantation Project
Teak Plantation Project
Sunwood (SWI) / Matsushita Electric Work Co., Ltd. (MEW) support to teak plantation establishment in Thailand. |
| |
 |
Teak is a unique timber species, world renown that hardly other timber can match its wide-ranging applications and prestige. The terms like, “teak the crown jewel of forests” or ‘teak the true green gold” were often used with out challenge.Though teak natural distribution occurs mainly in certain parts India, Myanmar and North of Thailand, teak plantation establishment both within and outside natural habitats has been practiced widely, in some 50 countries (Tiwari 1992), especially in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Total area of teak plantations, worldwide, was estimated on 2.2 mil. ha (Ball et.al.2000). In Thailand, Kaosa-ard (1995) estimated at 170,240 ha. Due to more farmers' participation in commercial teak plantation, small scale, present teak plantation in Thailand should be substantial. (Updated figure and age class to collected from RFD, later). |
|
| |
| Despite of long history of teak plantation establishment, (600-700 years in Indonesia (Simatopange 2000) and over 100 years in Myanmar and Thailand. Teak plantation productivity and success are variable, depend not only on suitable climate but also heavily on soil (site quality), Silvicultural practice as ell as pests' control. Growing teak on poor soil without proper management could take forever to maturity while from good natural plantation on good site and management like in Java, the diam; growth can be 10-20 mm/yr (annual ring width of 5-10 mm). Hence harvesting can be as short as 30-40 years, depending on the size preferred. Brazil currently manages teak plantation with 25-year rotational age. |
| |
| Growing tree or other crops in monoculture, pests are unavoidably encountered and often more intense that mixed species in natural forests. This is particularly so for pure teak plantation with vigorous growth full of succulent young leader shoots, buds, leaves and stems. Hence farmers besides making teak trees to grow fast, need to be aware of understand and learn how to control them e.g. teak leaf deforliators, skeletonizers, stem canker grubs and bee-hole borders, to mention a few. |
 |
|
| |
Sunwood and MEW extending a joint support to teak grower, therefore, would help boosting farmers' moral and making the life of these teak tree farmers a little bit easier after already commit to such a long-term investment. We sincerely hope

Soil improvement and fertilization ensuring adequate plant nutrients, and calcium, soil organic matters improvement etc. Insect protection; a watch out and control via bio/nontoxic means. Additional teak planting (next year) with certified super clone stocks secured from teak improvement center of RFD and propagate at site.
Duration of Collaborative support
